Get Ready! Marin
Dangerous Novelty Lighters
According to police, a woman in South Carolina recently shot herself in the hand while trying to light a cigarette with a pistol she had mistaken for a cigarette lighter. If an adult can’t tell the difference between a novelty lighter and a pistol, how can a child be expected to do so?  A six year old child picks up what he thinks is a hot wheels toy car, when in fact he is picking up a deadly toy novelty lighter without a safety switch.  Recent trends are to make lighters look like toys, not tools.  This has resulted in several documented tragic accidents, and it’s unknown how many have gone unreported.

So what can you do?  First, if you see a child playing with a novelty lighter, take it away and get rid of the lighter.  Many recalls have already begun, however, these novelty lighters have not been completely eliminated.  To help this effort, we suggest writing a letter to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, your Congressional Representative, local schools, and local organizations.  Visit www.theideabank.com for examples of letters, messages about novelty lighters and more information.
